Intvman's Intellicart Reviews

Below are some snippings of email I received from Intvman about his testing of the Intellicart. I did not edit out any Intellicart problems, just parts that did not apply to the Intellicart test itself. Hopefully he will write up an actual review when he gets the time.

The problem he mentions on the voice games not resetting was actually a general problem with the reset circuit on that prototype. It turns out that it was a cold solder joint. Since I'm having that work done professionally on the release carts that should be MUCH less likely to happen on those boards.

A comment on World Series Baseball. I could not get this cart to read correctly in my ROM reader. I read it four times and got a different result three out of four times. I tested the one image that occurred twice. It seemed to work ok except for one really annoying bug. Occasionally the sound would hang, so a sound like say crowd noise would not go away. I did not try the real cart on my setup, so I don't know if the problem is in the Intellicart, in my ECS, or in the ROM image itself. Given that I can't read the ROM consistently, I have little faith in the ROM image I used. (And I'm told that the ROM image of the game currently available is flawed as well.) Regardless, I'd have to list this as a game that, at least at this point, doesn't work correctly on the Intellicart.

All third-party games appear to work just fine. They include games by Sega, Interphase, Atarisoft, Parker Brothers, Ativision, and Imagic. We tried a couple Coleco games (Turbo & DK) and assume the rest will work as well. We also downloaded all the unfinished/unreleased games from the Intellivision Lives CD and played the ones we knew how to play (like Brickout, Crazy Clones, Air Strike, etc.). We also tried Land Battle, but nothing would happen after the title screen like you said. We also played League of Light and Robot Rubble on it without any problems as well as 3 of the 4 demos that were produced for Intellivision. What's important is that the Intellicart works for games like Body Slam Wrestling, Spiker Volleyball, Fathom, Tutankham, Super Cobra, Congo Bongo, Mud Buggies, River Raid, Turbo, demos/test cart, and all of the unreleased/unfinished/prototype games excluding Land Battle. These games, plus some others, are very hard to find making the Intellicart well worth the purchase. (There is the possibility other unreleased games may not work like Takeover or King of the Mountain, but not likely since the rest worked. I just don't know how to play these games.)

We did encounter one problem on the prototype Intellicart. It occurs on all four Intellivoice games. When you download the games to the Intellicart, there is no title screen to the loaded game after it completes the download. However, if you press the reset button it appears and you can play the game. Other than this, everything has worked fine. However, we have still not gotten to the ECS games.

Overall, we played about 60-70 games over the weekend. All worked without a problem. No other weird things happened with it either like power problems, overheating, etc. We used it for 6 hours one night.

Jason and I spent last night testing the ECS games. All work fine. Even Melody Blaster. We did not spend too much time on the Basic cart though. All we had time to test was the games. They work. Scooby, Jetson's, and Mindstrike work fine. We also played with the Triple Challenge and USCF Chess ROMs on the Intellicart. We could not recreate the error you showed us at your house. In fact, we encountered no problems at all with these games even in the "Setup" mode. Can you again tell me how the error occurred? To me, it seems the only games that won't work are Land Battle and (maybe) World Series Major League Baseball. We didn't get to test it though.

As these super rare games work; Congo Bongo Tutankham Super Cobra River Raid Mud Buggies Volleyball Body Slam Fathom Truckin

This alone makes it well worth it. In fact, all third-party Intellivision titles appear to work. The test cart and 3 of 4 known demos work. The protos I have work. The unfinished/unreleased CD emulator games work too. And since we couldn't recreate the error known in Chess and probably in TC, I think they work fine. This puts the total at over 150 games/demos available for play on the Intellicart. Not bad. I highly recommend this product to others. Jason and I tested about 2/3 of the games available, but focused on what i think are important games. We didn't spend too much time on Las Vegas Poker and Blackjack!
